Sarah was the oldest daughter of Simon Beckstead and Mary Elizabeth Calkins.
Her parents were natives of Canada and immigrated to Nauvoo, Illinois with many others to form the LDS church. Her parents were married in Nauvoo in 1845. On their way to Salt Lake City they stopped at what was then Kanesville and is now Council Bluffs, Iowa. Her parents decided to stay in that area as opposed to continuing on to Salt Lake. They settled in Fremont County, Iowa outside of Hamburg.
Sarah was the oldest of 10 children. She married Jacob Hessong in Fremont County, Iowa on 17 Jul 1864. They had three children: Mary E Hessong, Frances Hessong (md L.E. Kelley) and Pearl Hessong (md Jane Stuart). In 1880 they were still living in Fremont County, Iowa but by 1897 were living in Portland, Oregon.
Sarah died in 1932 at the age of 85 years 9 months.
