About Matilda Conigrave
The death was announced on Wednesday; of Mrs. Matilda Conigrave, relict of the late Mr. Benjamin Conigrave, who died on Tuesday, at the residence of her son, Mr. Joseph Conigrave, Gilles Street. The deceased lady had reached the advanced age of 91 years, and had spent a long and' useful life in the colony. Sailing from London in the ship Java, in October, 1839, Mrs. Conigrave and her husband, and their two boys, arrived at Holdfast Bay in February, 1840. ; They brought with them from England a wooden cottage and a tent. The latter was erected on the North Adelaide hill, and the cottage was put up later on in King William Street, close to where the National Bank how stands. Mr. and Mrs. Conigrave early associated themselves with the Independent Church, and were earnest and active workers with the Rev. T. Q'. Stow. Mrs. Conigrave was a frequent contributor to the press in the early days, and possessed considerable poetic talent. The deceased lady, leaves six sons, one daughter, thirty four grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren.
