After the death of Sir John de Ardern in 1408 Margaret married Sir Robert Babthorp as his second wife, by whom she had no issue and died 1423.

• Five years after this date, and when Hugh Wrottesley was nine years of age, an event occurred which materially affected his interests. Sir John Arderne, of Aldford, died in 9 Henry IV, leaving an 'only daughter', and under the settlement made of the Arderne estates in 21 Edward III, these should now have devolved on the issue of Robert de Legh and Hugh de Wrottesley as right heirs of Sir John Arderne and Elena, who had died in 1349.

• The Prince's attorney denied the allegations of Margaret, and appealed to a jury, which was to be summoned for the Tuesday after the close of Easter, on which day a jury found in favour of Margaret on all the issues, and stated that the rent of £10 proceeding from the manor of Upton had always been part of the manor of Aldford. It was therefore considered that the Prince should remove his hand and that Margaret should have restitution of the said manors and advowsons and rent, with all issues and profits from them from the date of her removal.
• This judgment left the Arderne estates in the illegitimate descendants of Sir John de Arderne, who died in 23 Edward III. John de Arderne, the husband of Margaret, the plaintiff in the above suit, left an 'only daughter and heiress, Matilda, who married Thomas de Stanley'. There appears, however, to have been an appeal from this judgment and a compromise, for the Inquisition on Robert de Legh, who died in 3 Henry V, states he was seised of an annual rent of £10, granted to him and his heirs by Thomas de Stanley, to be received from the manor of Alderley. Later generations of the Leghs, however, did not acquiesce in this compromise, and the endeavours of the Leghs and Wrottesleys to recover the Arderne estates are recorded at intervals on the Cheshire Plea Rolls for more than a hundred years after this date.

• ' A younger son of Sir John, Thomas Stanley, who is erroneously described in many of the pedigrees as a knight, married Matilda, sole daughter and heiress of Sir John Arderne, of Elford and Alford. In right of his wife he became lord of Elford and Alford, as also of Alderleigh — the present Alderley — and was founder of the Stanleys of Elford and the Stanleys of Pipe, in Staffordshire.' The eldest son, also a Sir John, fully sustained the dignity of the family. He was Knight of the Shire for Lancaster, Justice of Chester, Constable of Caernarvon Castle, and Sheriff of Anglesea. He married a daughter of the great House of Haryngton, then one of the most powerful names in Lancashire, and thus became allied with the Nevilles, the Beauforts, and other great governing families of the kingdom; and dying in 1431, left, in addition to two sons, Richard and Edward, who were successively archdeacons of Chester, Thomas, who became, as his grandfather had been before, Lord Lieutenant of Ireland, a post he held for six years. He was a warrior as well as a negotiator, and, having served the offices of Comptroller of the Household and Chamberlain to King Henry VI., was chosen Knight of the Shire, had the Garter conferred upon him, and eventually (January 20, 1456) emerged from among the country gentry and was summoned to the House of Peers as Baron Stanley, a dignity that he did not, however, long enjoy, his death occurring three years later. Following the example of others of his kin, he sought out a heiress for a mate, and found a fitting wife in the person of Joan, a daughter and heir of Sir Robert Gowsell, or Goushill, of Hoveringham, in Nottinghamshire, the lady's mother being Elizabeth, daughter and co-heiress of Richard Fitzalan, Earl of Arundel, and consequently a representative in her person not only of the family de Albine, as well as that of the Earls

• of Warren, but of the blood royal of England, she being, moreover, widow of Thomas Mowbray, Duke of Norfolk, who had been fully recognised by the Crown as a prince of the royal blood. This marriage brought another quartering to the Stanley shield, that of Warren — chequy or and azure, which was borne as the third coat in the first grand quarter.

Notes for SIR THOMAS STANLEY, KNT.:

Sir Thomas was the third son of Sir John de Stanley K.G. and Isabel Latham. He was the founder of the Elford and Pipe (Staffordshire) branch of the Stanley family.

Haselour Hall came into the Stanley family through the marriage of Sir Thomas and Matilda Arderne.

On this marriage to Matilda de Arderne, Sir Thomas became possessed of the estates of Elford, Haselour, Clifton Campville and Pipe Ridware in Staffordshire; Camplen super Wild in Gloucestershire; Sibbertoft in Northamptonshire; and Alford, Nether Alderley and Echells (in the Parish of Northenden) in Cheshire.

There is some confusion as to her name. In the visitation of Staffordshire she is shown as Maud Arderne, she is shown on inspcriptions in Elford Church as Matilda. During this period in history the name "Maud" was commonly used for the name "Matilda"

In the reign of Henry III William de Arderne held the manor of Elford and his descendants continued to enjoy it till the marriage of Matilda to Thomas, third son of Sir John Stanley of Latham, carried it into that family. By a succession of females it passed, in like manner, to the families of Staunton, Smith, Huddleston and Bowes.
