About Matthew Sheffield Cassan

See Burke's, 1875, online for Cassan lineage -- Matthew Casson's father was Stephen Cassan, Protestant from Montpelier who sought asylum in Holland after the revocation of the Edict of Nantes. In 1689, fought in foreign brigade under Schomberg in Ireland and eventually settled in Queen's County, now Co. Laois and married Elizabeth Sheffield, sole heir to her father's estates in Navestock, Essex, England, and Cappoly, Co. Laois, Ireland. His only son Matthew Sheffield Cassan built a mansion on his mother's lands in Cappoly, Co. Laois, which he called Sheffield. In 1723, he married Ann Baldwin, daughter of Jonathan Baldwin of Summerhill, Queen's Co. who wore herself out producing his children and died at the age of 39, the same year her daughter Jane was born. In 1740, he married Christian Walsh whose father was John Walsh, Esq. of Jamaica.
