Matthew Caswell was born in 1645 in Lower Norfolk , Colony of Virginia, son of William Caswell (1614– ).

Matthew (34) married Johanna Biggs (26) (born in 1653 in Lower, Norfolk, Virginia; daughter of John Biggs Sr. and Johannah (Norsworthy) Biggs) about 1680.

His children were were:

1. Martha Caswell (~1681– )
2. Francis Caswell (~1682–~1712)
3. William Caswell (1684– )
4. Jabez Caswell (~1686–1718)
5. Jane Jeane Caswell (~1688–>1750)
6. Matthew Caswell (1691–~1754)
7. Constant Caswell (~1695–~1739)

Matthew died on March 15, 1703 in Norfolk, Colony of Virginia, aged 57.

The mother of Constant is very confusing. There are three different women listed in various online trees.

• Johanna (Biggs) Caswell (abt.1653-1694) - Her father's first wife, but she died prior to 1694. That would mean either Constant was born before then or this is not possible.
• Elizabeth Spruill - As this is the name of the wife of her brother, Matthew Caswell (Elizabeth (Spruill) Caswell, it seems unlikely that his wife and mother would have the same name.
• Elizabeth Wilson - Most trees show her as the mother. The problem with her is that almost all trees have used the dates of Johanna Biggs as the ones for Elizabeth. I believe a woman named Elizabeth Wilson, with no idea of what her birth/death dates are, is the mother of Constant.
