About Matthew Green Kennedy, I

The CADIZ SENTINEL, Cadiz, OH published the following article on April 23, 1874;

In Rush Township, Tuscarawas County, still reside some members of the Kennedy family, who were among the pioneer settlers. We have obtained the following particulars from one of their members.

Mathew Kennedy, the father of the family, was born in Scotland, and came to the country at an early day. He died in 1847, aged 87 years. The children are named in the following order; William G., Sullivan, Indiana, is still living and is about eighty years of age; Citizen J. has been dead about ten years. At his death he resided near Deersville, this county. John L. is residing near Gnadenhutten, Tuscarawas county; Napoleon B. resides in Rush township, aged seventy-two years; Return M. over seventy years of age, resides in this county; David W., over seventy years old, lives in Rush township; Ahio, of Iowa, aged oversixty five years; Thomas B. living in Washington township, Tuscarawas county, is over sixty years old; Philip H. of West Bedford, Coshocton county; Jacob J. died about four years ago in West Bedford; Abraham F. died in this county in 1845; Christian resides in Grundy county, Mo; David is now residing in New Philadelphia.

The father and mother of the above named thirteen gentlemen, had four daughters, all of whom are now dead. Eleven of the sons were married while living in Moorefield township, and the majority of whom have reared large families. Ahio married a sister of our genial friend, Milton Harvey, Esq., and from last information we have received they had eighteen children; all healthy, robust children, and all being single births. Thirteen or fourteen were sons.

Eight or nine members of this remarkable family were members of the Methodist Church. While living with their parents not one of them became addicted to the use of tobacco, and, our informant says he never knew one of them to be intoxicated. He never knew one of them to be sued or to sue anyone, and that all were land-holders.

Members of this family are living in six or eight states. There are a large number of grand and great-grand children.

It is supposed that R. M. Kennedy is the oldest inhabitant now living in Moorefield township; not the oldest person, but the earliest settler. His father, with his family, moved to what is now Moorefield township between the years 1808 and 1810. At that time post-offices in Harrison county were like angel visits- few and far between- and some persons would have to go ten and some times twenty miles to the post-office, and then be compeled to pay twenty-five cents for a letter."
