Matthew Matthewson

According to DNA evidence Matti Juhonpoika Luoto (Matts Johansson Luoto) is the same person who settled in New Zealand and changed there his name to Matthew Matthewson (also Matson and Matheson). Matthew was a Finnish sailor on the "Duke of Sutherland" when he was shipwrecked at Timaru in New Zealand in 1882.

Enlisted in the Raahe Seamen's house in Sep 18, 1875 (seaman number 280). In his 2nd voyage, in Dec 27 1878, Matts Luoto deserted in Baltimore from the ship Matts August with 3 other sailors, Karl Gustaf Pecklin, Oskar Nordberg and Michel Kulju. (Source: Raahe Seamen's house archive.)
