About Matthew Rodham
Some believe the parents of Matthew Rodham are Edmund and Margaret (Grey) Rodham. More evidence needs to be found. If these are Matthew's parents, he has older brothers Ralph (d. 1615), John, Edward, and Thomas.
Rodham came to America with a group of men who were servants c. 1634, '35, or '36 on the ships James and Revenge. He worked as a servant for about 5 years. It was recorded on 28 Oct. 1639 that Matthew had served his full time for William Clobery & Company of London, England, Merchants. Part of his time as a servant was spent with the Hale family.
In 1648[3], he married Elizabeth Hewitt in either Northumberland, Virginia or Kent Island, Maryland, and the couple had four [sic: five] daughters:
- - Hannah Rodham m. Christopher Neale
- - Elizabeth Rodham m. Richard Kenner
- - Susannah Rodham m. Robert Mason
- - Mary Rodham m. Richard Rice
- - Sarah Rodham m. Claudius Tullos
He held the offices of Commissioner, Juror, Justice, and Vestryman.[4]
By 1663, he had acquired 393 acres of land from Hugh Lee[5].
His date of death is alternately given as 1665 or 20 March 1671.
