Matthias Ward (October 13, 1805 – October 5, 1861) was a lawyer and United States Senator from Texas.

Born in Elbert County, Georgia, Ward was raised in Alabama. In 1836 he settled in Bowie, Texas, moving to Clarksville, Texas in 1845 and later to Jefferson, Texas.

Ward served in the Congress of the Republic of Texas and later in the state Senate as a Democrat. This was followed by unsuccessful campaigns for lieutenant governor in 1851 and United States Congress in 1855.

Upon J. Pinckney Henderson’s death in 1858, Ward was appointed to replace him in the United States Senate; he failed to secure the nomination to run for the seat in election the next year.

Mathais Ward Jr was born on 13 October 1805 at Elbert County, Georgia. He was the son of Mathais Ward Sr and Elizabeth Salmons. Mathais Ward Jr married Elizabeth L. Sanders, daughter of Edward Sanders and Locky Trigg, on 25 May 1836 at Shelby County, Tennessee. Mathais Ward Jr was a member of the Texas Republic House of Representatives. between 1842 and 1844. He was a member of the Texas State Senate. between 1849 and 1850. He was a US Senator from Texas. between 1858 and 1859. He was a Senator from Texas; born in Elbert County, Ga., October 13, 1805; was raised in Madison County, Ala; received a college education in Huntsville, Ala; taught school two years; studied law; moved to the Republic of Texas in 1836 and settled in Bowie, Montague County, and subsequently in Clarksville, Red River County, in 1845; engaged in trading; served a number of years in the Congress of the Republic of Texas; moved to Jefferson, Marion County, Tex; served in the State senate; appointed as a Democrat to the United States Senate to fill the vacancy caused by the death of J. Pinckney Henderson and served from September 27, 1858, to December 5, 1859, when a successor was elected; died at Warm Springs, near Raleigh, N.C., October 5, 1861; interment in the Old City Cemetery, Nashville, Tenn. He died on 5 October 1861 at Warm Springs, North Carolina, at age 55. He was buried at Old City Cemetery, Nashville, Tennessee.
