History of Matt Jacobson 1878 - 1935
According to church records Matt Jacobson was born Matti Jaakonpoika Järvenpää Paavola on 24 August 1978 on the Järvenpää Farm, in Tiistenjoki, Lapua Parish, Finland to Jaakko Matinpoika Järvenpää Paavola and Valpuri Kreetantytär Järvenpää Ulvinen.

Matti's father Jaakko was born Paavola and his name changed to Järvenpää after his marriage and moving to Järvenpää farm and Matti's mother Valpuri Serafia was born as an illegitimate child under the name Ulvinen, raised under her step father's Fossi name and then married under the Järvenpää name on 2 October 1875 In Lapua.
Matt (1878 - 1935) was the second of 8 children born to Jaakko and Valpuri. His siblings were Anna Maria (1875 - 1949) who joined him in Canada, Kaisa (1880 - 1935) who emigrated to Michigan USA, Sanna Sofia (1882 - 1957), Kustaa Vihtori (1884 - 1941) who emigrated to Minnesota, USA, Amanda Aliina (1887 -?), Lempi Amalia (1890 - 1965), and Tynne Eedla (1897 - 1918).
A family story about Matt's decision to emigrate relates to Matt working in the field back in Finland and a friend going by saying that he was going to America and Matt left the plow in the field and followed his friend. This was also the time when enlistment in the Russian army was mandatory and many Finns opposed serving in the Russian army. This latter fact may have been the stronger motivation for Matt.
A ship manifest (SS New York) dated 7 April 1900 shows a Matti Järvenpää, age 22, leaving Southampton and arriving New York and travelling by himself. He had $14 upon his arrival. His destination was listed as Ohio. Upon his arrival in Canada Matt took on the surname Jacobson, This surname may have been adopted based upon his Uncle John Jacobson who already was in Canada or derived from the Swedish form of his own patronymic Jacobson.
Ontario Census dated Mar. 31, 1901 lists a Mat Jacobson, born Sept. 14, 1878, immigrated in 1890 and naturalized in 1891. The Finnish church record Virkatodistus gives a date of birth of Aug. 24, 1878 and emigrated in 1899, which seems more reasonable as Matt would have been age 12 in 1890.
On the 14 Januray 1904 in Fort William, Ontario, Canada, Matt Jacobson married the widow Gustava Sippola with maiden names Ainali and Saralampi. Witnesses to that marriage were Sanford Jacobson and Anna Jacobson. This new family began with a son Walter Sippola 1899 from Gustava's first marriage to John Sippola. A baby Impi died as an infant in 1903. Matt and Gustava had 6 children: Waino 1904 - 1953, Jack 1905 - 1966, Elma 1907 - 1990, Laina 1909 - 19765, Niilo 1910 - 1911, and Reino 1913 - 1963
Once Matt's homestead was established anecdotal evidence suggests that he work his farm as his main occupation raising sheep and chickens and a small timber operation on back of the property. He had a team of horses and son Reino is reported to have done some road gradering for the township. Matt may have worked outside the farm for timber operators from time to time but nothing has been found to confirm that supposition.
