About Mattie Laura Noyes
The 7th child of St. Anthony artist, inventor and photographer, Talmadge Elwell and his wife, Margaret Miller Elwell, Mary attended local schools; she was interested in arts and music, sang in the local Congregational church choir and wrote poetry. She was an unusually attractive young lady, with many beaus.
With her mother's encouragement, she was also one of the early women students of the University of Minnesota, graduating with a degree of B.Litt. in 1889. She originally planned on teaching, but instead married a young widower.
She apparently attracted the interest of university medical research student, William Noyes, who originally boarded with the Elwell family when living near the university in the S.E. Como neighborhood. He was pursuing post graduate medical studies at the university and then, as today, the near university neighborhood, attracted students and scholars.
Marie was engaged and married in Minneapolis in 1903. She became the second wife of Dr. William Noyes. They had one child together, Charles E. Noyes, in 1904. Marie developed what was probably "TB" (lung disease) and died in Rutland, VT where she was staying at a "TB" sanitorium. She was only 50 years old when she died.
