About Maude Chamberlin Damon
She was buried at Lakeview Cemetery in Cleveland, Ohio. A news clipping from the Plain Dealer (no date) says, "GAVE HER LIFE FOR OTHERS"
"In order that others might live, Miss Maude Chamberlain Damon, aged twenty years, gave her life in pursuance of her duties. Miss Damon was a nurse at Charity hospital and for the past six months had been stationed in the typhoid ward. During the recent epidemic the ward has been crowded, and owing to the increased number of patients she became overworked and contracted the disease. She died yesterday morning in the same ward where she had once labored. Miss Damon was a great favorite in the hospital on account of her cheerfulness and ability. The funeral services will be held tomorrow at 3 pm in the Wade Memorial chapel of Lake View cemetery. The staff of nurses will attend the funeral and will present several floral pieces." From another news clipping, "REARED IN LUXURY; DIED FOR OTHERS."
"Nurse whose Father had once been rich succumbed to typhoid in Charity Hospital
Miss Maude Chamberlain Damon, nurse at Charity Hospital hospital, died at that institution of typhoid fever Friday. She had given her life while serving others afflicted with that disease. Though reared in luxury, she had always wanted to be a nurse. Till a year and a half ago, when she came to Cleveland, Miss Damon lived in Boston. Her father had been a wealthy manufacturer. Reverses came and he lost most of his money. Then his health failed. Miss Damon had to begin life's battle for herself. She turned naturally to nursing. . .
Miss Damon had lived with E.L. Harris, 1649 Lamont St., principal of Central high school. She will be buried Sunday afternoon at Lake View cemetery."
