About Mauricio Canciller Evangelista
Don Mauricio Canciller Evangelista was the Gobernadorcillo of Candaba, Pampanga in 1856. He was a member of the Evangelista Clan, a Principalia Family and one of the largest landowners in Pampanga during the Spanish Colonial Rule. They were mestizos de Sangley (Chinese mestizos).
Born on September 22, 1826, Don Mauricio was one of five sons born to haciendero Don Gaspar Evangelista and his wife Doña Guillerma del Rosario.. He and his brothers had the reputation as “matenacan,” a Kapampangan word meaning very wise, brilliant, learned, well-bred. They were also known as very hardworking landowners in Candaba. His older brother Don Tranquilino was the first Evangelista to be elected into high office as Gobernadorcillo in 1841. When Don Mauricio was 29 years old, he too was elected as Gobernadorcillo of Candaba, and was addressed by the honorific title as Capitan.
Capitan Mauricio was married to Doña Alberta Trinidad. Among their eight children was Don Hugo Canciller Evangelista or Cabesang Hugo, who served as Cabeza de Barangay in Candaba and was well-liked by his constituents.
In 2023, Don Mauricio Canciller Evangelista’s life was immortalized in the Evangelista Clan book, "Recuerdos de Candaba: Casa de Evangelista, Familia Principalia."
