Maurício (Moisés) Bensaúde (also known professionally as Maurizio Bensaude) (13 February 1863, in Ponta Delgada – 22 December 1912, in Lisbon), was a Portuguese operatic baritone. He arrived in Lisbon in 1884, where he received vocal training for a short time, and then made his debut in the same year at the Teatro da Trindade in Lisbon, in the opérette La petite mariée by Charles Lecocq. He then worked in another operetta at the Portuguese capital, in the Teatro de D. Maria, where he appeared in operettas and musical comedies. However, he continued to take singing lessons, and began to take on operatic roles as well at the end of the 1880s. He quickly became a success, and went on to have extensive international guest appearances.

In 1896, he sang at the Teatro Costanzi in Rome, playing Riccardo in Bellini's I Puritani in 1897, and playing Gunther in Twilight of the Gods. In the 1893–94 and 1898–99 seasons, he was engaged at the Metropolitan Opera in New York, where he served as Amonasro in the debut of Aida. In 1899, he performed at the Teatro Regio in Turin, and in 1900, he performed at the Covent Garden Opera in London as Amonasro and as Figaro in Barber of Seville. He also had other guest appearances at the Berlin Court Opera, the Teatro Argentina in Rome, Paris and Milan, at the Odessa Opera, and in Zagreb. He also toured through Brazil and the United States.

In 1910, he gave up his stage career. At times he worked as the head of an opera troupe, with whom he held opera performances in Portugal. He worked as a teacher and was active in the management of the Teatro de São Carlos in Lisbon, but he died two years after his farewell stage.

Bensaude was married to the opera singer Julia de Fano. His repertoire for the stage included Enrico in Lucia di Lammermoor, Germont in La Traviata, Lescaut in Manon by Massenet, the Escamillo in Carmen, Marcello in Puccini's La Boheme, and Alfio in Cavalleria Rusticana.

US career Although Bensaude was primarily active in Europe, he had more than a passing career in the United States. He made his debut at New York's Metropolitan Opera on November 23, 1894, as Amonasro in Verdi's Aida,[1] and his debut in Philadelphia on the following December 18 in the same role.[2] he would remain a member of the Metropolitan company for the remainder of the season. At least at first he made little impression in New York, where critics described his voice as "pleasant"[3] or "tolerable"; The New York Times, in a generally mixed review of the production, indicated the artist "lacks distinction, both vocally and dramatically."[4] Perhaps Bensaude was overshadowed by other developments; the Aida soprano Libia Drog was attempting to erase memories of her own unsuccessful New York debut two days earlier in Rossini's William Tell, when she was so stricken by stage fright that she froze onstage and was unable to perform,[1] and the Rhadames, Francesco Tamagno, drew critical reproval for "bawling" his part over the footlights.[3]

Maurício BensaúdePortugalski bariton Maurício Bensaúde bio je prvi bariton u trećoj stagioni pod vodstvom Nikole Fallera koja je trajala od 1. travnja do 31. svibnja 1894. Nastupio je u svim operama na repertoaru. Pjevao je u Aidi, Carmen, Faustu, Cavalleriji rusticani, prvim hrvatskim izvedbama Pagliaccija, u kojima je Neddu pjevala njegova supruga Julia de Fano y Martin Rubio, Romea i Julije te Mignon i u Seviljskom brijaču.

Maurício (Moisés) Bensaúde, rođen 13. veljače 1863. u Ponti Delgadi, došao je 1884. u Lisabon i nakon kraćeg učenja pjevanja iste je godine debitirao u tamošnjem Teatru del Trinidad u opereti La petite mariée (Mlada nevjesta) Charlesa Lecocqa (1832-1918). Nastupao je u operetama i glazbenim komedijama, pjevački se usavršavao i počeo pjevati u operi. Krajem osamdesetih već je bio toliko uznapredovao i nizao uspjehe, pa je počeo gostovati u inozemstvu. Zagreb je bio jedan od gradova na tome putu. Nakon Zagreba Bensaúde je sezonu 1894./1895. proveo u Metropolitanu, gdje je pjevao nekoliko uloga s najslavnijim pjevačima onoga doba, sudjelovao u gala koncertu i ostvario tridesetak nastupa.

Godine 1896. i dio 1897. pjevao je u Teatru Costanzi u Rimu, a onda ga je Stjepan pl. Miletić angažirao u sezoni 1897./1898. u zagrebački operni ansambl u drugom razdoblju djelovanja zagrebačke Opere. U prosincu 1897. Bensaúde se predstavio kao Renato u Čuvidskom plesu (Krabuljnom plesu). Miletić ga je u Hrvatskom glumištu nazvao „elegantni naš Figaro, Don Juan i Eskamilo“, a Hrvatsko pravo pisalo je u broju od 13. studenoga 1897. da je u ansambl ušao „Portugizac Maurizio Bensaude koji je došao nakon Kašmana i Vespasianija u kojega je bilo samo grlo a nikakva škola. Bensaude ima ne preobsežno ali gibko grlo, izvrstnu školu, meki, topli timbre.“ Povodom izvedbe Don Juana Miletić piše: „Naročito je gosp. Bensaude u naslovnoj ulozi stajao na visini, za koju mu je i münhenski nosilac te partije (gosp. Feinhals – nomen est omen) mogao zavidjeti. Secco-recitative svladavao je s lakoćom, kao da govori prozu. Igra i pojava bile su elegantne, nedostajala je tek demonska igra.“

Bensaúde je pjevao Wolframa u Tannhäuseru, Lunu u Trubaduru i Amonasra u Aidi, a 16. travnja 1898. bio je Wotan u prvoj hrvatskoj izvedbi Walküre. Miletić nije baš bio s njim zadovoljan. Pisao je: „Glazbeno vrlo naobražen nije taj pjevač doista ništa pokvario, ali je to bio više talijanski negoli njemački 'bog'.“ Bensaúde je svom već poznatom repertoaru dodao Barnabu u Giocondi. Zadržao se jednu sezonu i opet krenuo u svijet. U Metropolitanu je još jedanput nastupio krajem 1898, sljedeće godine pjevao je u Torinu, a 1900. nalazimo ga u Covent Gardenu s glasovitom Nellie Melbom u Luciji di Lammermoor. Godine 1902. bio je bariton talijanske stagione u Theateru an der Wien u Beču. Nakon nastupanja u nizu velikih europskih kazališta, 1910. završio je pjevačku karijeru, počeo je podučavati i aktivno je sudjelovao u upravi Teatra São Carlos u Lisabonu, u kojemu je umro 22. prosinca 1912. Bensaúde je bio još jedan od onih pjevača međunarodnog ugleda koji su nastupali u zagrebačkoj Operi i pomogli njezinu napretku.
