About Maybelle Dorothy Jaffe
Mabel Jaffe May 23, 2002|The Morning Call Mabel "Maybelle" Jaffe of Lehigh Street, Wilson, died May 22 in Easton Hospital. She was an administrative secretary for Easton Area School District for more than 40 years before retiring in 1973. Born in New York City, she was a daughter of the late Abraham and Sadie (Shapiro) Jaffe. She was a member of B'nai Abraham, Wilson, and its Leisure League and Hadassah. She was a member of the board of directors of the Easton Heritage Alliance, Chansonette Theater, Guthsville Playhouse, Jewish Community Center, and the former YWCA, Easton. Survivor: Sister, Frances Antopol of New York City. Services: 1 p.m. Friday in the synagogue. No calling hours. Arrangements, Ashton Funeral Home, Easton. Contributions: Charity of choice.
Maybelle came to San Francisco in 1946 to give birth to Carol at the age of 38, never revealing her pregnancy to members of her large family, and shortly thereafter returned to Easton. When she met her daughter, she was so embarrassed and ashamed about her status as an unwed mother that she insisted Carol not make contact with her family.
