About Meene-Oke-Dawin Meene-oke-dawin Minnetonka Wife of Petitie Carboneau
Individual Note
Meene-oke-dawin was the first wife of Chief Little Crow IV, or Big Thunder, Wakeyantanka, who was chief from 1834 - 1846. She was from the Wabasha band and was probably related to Wabasha. Apparently she left Big Thunder at an early date, probably in the 1820’s, after the chief took two more wives. She lived with her own band until her death. She did not marry again.
She was the mother of the most famous Chief Little Crow, Taoyataduta, who led the Sioux uprising of 1862. She was celebrated for her beauty and spirit.
It is said that she used to plunge her son into the lake through a hole in the ice, rubbing him afterward with snow, to strengthen his nerves, and that she would remain with him alone in the deep woods for days at a time, so that he might know that solitude is good, and not fear to be alone with nature.
"My son," she would say, "If you are to be a leader of men, you must listen in silence to the mystery, the spirit."
She greatly wished him to become a worthy leader according to the ideas of her people.
Little Crow was said to an intensely ambitious man and without physical fear. He was always in perfect training and acquired the art of warfare of the Indian type at a young age.
event: was also known as wife of Petite Corbeau Misc
