About Meghan Cremer

Meghan Cremer (1989– 2019)

Brief overview:

Meghan (30), disappeared on Saturday evening 3rd August 2019. She did not turn up for work on Monday at Woodstock Bakery, where she worked with her brother, Paul.

Linda Mohr, her close friend and neighbour at the Vaderlansche Rietvlei stud farm in Ottery, said she had spoken to Cremer on Saturday afternoon. The 30-year-old, from Knysna, told her friend she was "all snuggled up and ready for bed" with her new dog.

Her body was found on a sand mine on a Philippi farm in the early hours of Thursday morning. According to a police source, Meghan had been either choked or strangled to death and was fully clothed when her body was found.

  • Trial/Conviction
    • 22/06/2020 The trial of Jeremy Sias (27) has been transferred to the Western Cape High Court. He faces charges of murder, theft and defeating the ends of justice.
    • The case against Daniels and Jaftha has been transferred to the Athlone Regional Court, where they are expected to appear in the dock on 29 June 2020.
    • Jaftha, who the State said is a self-proclaimed member of the Six Bobs gang, has a previous assault conviction for which he had pleaded guilty and paid a fine of R100.
    • All three accused also have several withdrawn cases, mostly because witnesses failed to appear in court, News24 previously reported.
    • May 2022: Abraham Fransman, who lives in Egoli informal settlement, and was captured on CCTV footage attempting to draw money from Meghan’s account on 4th August 2019, appeared in court in May 2022. Fransman testified that Sias had come to his place of work at 2am on Sunday 4th August and attempted to sell Cremer’s white Toyota Auris to him.
    • The trial continues.
    • 26/01/2023: The only suspect who stood trial on charges of murdering Meghan Cremer van Philippi in Cape Town, Jeremy Sias, was acquitted. He will be sentenced in March. Judge Elizabeth Baartman ruled that Sias' version that he found Cremer's body in the trunk of her car at the time after he had driven it a distance "cannot be rejected as not reasonably possible". According to Baartman, police officers also left out evidence during their investigation that they thought could help the accused.
    • 25/05/2023: Jeremy Sias (30) was sentenced on Thursday on charges of theft and obstruction of justice. Judge Elizabeth Baartman found Jeremy Sias (30) guilty on these two charges in January this year. In a short ruling, Baartman sentenced Sias to eight years in prison for the theft of Cremer's car and her handbag, which contained her mobile phones and purse. Four of the eight years were suspended for five years, provided he does not commit any other crime during this period. He was sentenced to two years on charges of obstruction of justice because he did not tell anyone that he came across her body in the trunk of the car when he took a fun ride in her abandoned car. He was sentenced to one year in prison for stealing money from her bank account. Baartman determined that the sentences are to be served concurrently and Sias will therefore effectively serve four years in prison. Four years of the eight are suspended for five years providing he does not commit another crime in that time. He was sentenced to two years for defeating the ends of justice by not telling anyone he found her body in the boot after taking her abandoned car for a joyride. He was sentenced to one year in prison for the theft of money from her bank account.
    • Meghan's murder remains unsolved.
