The Schochet family was one of the distinguished families in Telshe, Lithuania. Although R' Meir Shmaryahu supported himself by the work of his hands, he spent his time studying Torah. He was from the leaders of the Chevre Shas (a group dedicated to studying Talmud) in his city
R' Meir Shmaryahu's father R' Shimon Yaakov was known as a righteous person. Many people would turn to him for blessings and request that he pray on their behalf.
