About Melissa Carpenter
I attended Aunt Laura's funeral at Papillion, Ne. I think it was summer of 1934. Grandma and Aunt Laura married brothers. She was Pearl Lamb's mother. They (Isaac and Laura) came to Papillion, too, but never moved any further. Can you imagine starting 65 miles in covered wagon in December? Nothing but mud roads and the Blue River to cross at Oketo. I think Grandpa must have liked to travel in cool weather because it was October when they left Iowa and that was 200 (maybe 250) miles with a lot of streams to cross including the Missouri river.
When they came here it was grandpa, grandma and 9 children ranging in ages from 22 to 2. Mom said they made beds on the kitchen floor where they stopped.
