Melvin's second marriage was to Lorene Elnoor Dickerson Smith on 19 Nov 1906 in Hunt Co, TX. Melvin and Lorene had 9 children: Nellie Mae, Elmer C, John Ellis, Mary Anna, Berta M, Gertrude Lanier, Margie, Ella W, and Verta Marine Johnson.

Melvin was born April 12, 1870 in Hamilton Co, Illinois. His father was killed in early 1872. Melvin's mother moved back to Putnam Co, TN where she gave birth to her second son, Riley R Johnson. Mary Johnson with her two sons moved with her sisters and brother to Franklin Co, Arkanas in late 1881. In 1897 Melvin with his mother, Riley and his wife and daughter, and several other relatives moved to Lamar Co, Texas. Melvin moved to Childress after the birth of his last daugheter in 1928. Melvin was a farmer.
