Melvin married Mary Todd (Taylor) Leonard Clark on June 20, 1930 in Salt Lake City, Salt Lake County, Utah, United States. Together they had the following children: Jon Michael Leonard.

He died on June 16, 1936 in Pocatello, Bannock County, Idaho, United States from Heart Attack and was buried on June 20, 1936 in Salt Lake City Cemetery, Salt Lake City, Salt Lake County, Utah, United States.
