Menno W. Hess, 75, of 333 West Sunset Avenue, Ephrata, died at 11:55 a.m. Wednesday in the Ephrata Community Hospital. Death was caused by a heart ailment. He was admitted to the hospital on December 22 after being stricken ill while surveying property near Ephrata. He was president of the Ephrata Borough Council and was a leader in civic affairs for many years. Mr. Hess was named to council in 1942. He had served as Chief Burgess from 1928 to 1933 and prior to that had served on the Borough Council from 1914 to 1928. He served as a member of the School Board from 1904 to 1914. Mr. Hess was one of the leaders in fostering the building of the borough's municipality-owned electric light plant and the present newly erected Community Hospital. He was a member of the board of directors of the hospital, and a member of the First Evangelical United Brethren Church of Ephrata. Besides his wife, Mrs. Magdaline Sensenig Hess, the following children survive: Lloyd S. and J. Gale and Anna S., wife of Ray Ayres, all of Ephrata; Ralph S. Hess, Danville, Va.; and Marlan, wife of J. Gordon Starr, Annville. Eleven grandchildren and a sister, Mrs. Emma Burkholder, Lancaster, also survive.
