The son of the late Arthur and Carrie (Wisley) Reed, Merel was born on September 12, 1921 in Wichita, KS. His family lived in Kingman, KS for a short time before moving to Lincoln County south of Agra where he was reared and educated. At the age of 17 he moved back to Kansas where he played minor league baseball. Merel then joined the 3 C's (Civilian Conservation Corps) and moved to Wyoming. He moved back to Oklahoma when his mother fell ill and later joined the United States Army in 1942. Just before being transferred to Hawaii, Merel was united in marriage to Mary Jane Porter on August 22, 1943 in Tryon, OK. Most of Merel's time in the Army was spent serving as a cook and while stationed in Washington D.C. he even cooked for President Dwight D. Eisenhower. Merel received his honorable discharge in 1946 and returned to Agra.
Merel, his wife Jane, and their family lived in several communities which included stays in Cushing, California, Perry, Stillwater, Perkins, and eventually settling in Cushing. During that time he worked as a Meat Cutter for Safe-Way in California, Stillwater, and Cushing, and at Ralph's Meat Packing and Delmar's Food Store in Perkins. Merel also worked for a short time before his retirement for National Standard in Stillwater.
Merel was baptized into the General Assembly and Church of the Firstborn in Parkland as a young man. In his spare time he enjoyed wood working (especially with cedar), fishing, hunting, and camping.
In addition to his parents, Merel was preceded in death by one daughter, Mary Lou Reed; one granddaughter, Sonya Korene Ward; and 12 brothers and sisters.* Reference: Find A Grave Memorial - SmartCopy: Jan 28 2019, 18:09:24 UTC
