About Michał Czyżowicz
GEDCOM Note
Owned a farm at Janow Lwowski outside Lwow. Also ran a blacksmith's workshop + shoeing horses (ferrier). During World War I he was enlisted in the Austrian Army as ferrier.
During the 1920-1930-ties he served as Deputy Fire Chief in Janow's Volontary Fire Brigade.
When the Red Army reached Janow in the Spring of 1944 (shortly after his eldest son Józef had been arrested by the Gestapo for serving in The AK) Michal was arrested for his political view and sent to the Gulag - from which he returned in late 1946. During his abscence the whole village was deported to the west part of Poland - what was to be known as the Oder-Neise-line. His wife, Józefa, had to manage the deportation with her 6 children - the youngest beeing only an infant. The eldest, Józef was in koncentration camp (Gross Rosen then Sachsenhausen Oranienburg) and Piotr, the second eldest, was on forced labour in Germany outside Stuttgard.
After his return from the Gulag Michal never regain his health completely and died an invalid in 1961 on the new family farm in Prohowice.
