http://www.safrika.org/Names/schiff_01.html http://www.eastlondon-labyrinth.com/germans/index.jsp On arrival he decided to change the family surname to Hein and he settled together with his family among the Kaffraria Germans in the settlement of Braunschweig close to King Wiliams town, East London in the Cape Province.
THe original information was obtained from Edwin Hein of East London and from the records kept by family members and the ship passenger list. HANNA was killed while collecting sand from a pit when the side of the pit collapsed on her. By that union there was one child, Wilhelm. MICHAEL then married Hanna's sister WILHEMINE. Before leaving Prussia two more children were born, August Friedrich and Hanna. The family arrived in East London, Cape Colony on the 7th July 1858 aboard the immigrant ship, CESAR GODEFFROY. On the passenger list the name is spelt HEYN. THis casual spelling appears in several of the names as variations of spelling was perfectly acceptable in the German language. Details of the passenger lists and interesting accounts of the hardships endured by the immigrants can be obtained from the book 'For Men Must Work' by E.L.G. Schnell. This is a deposition that Schnell wrote for his doctorate at the university of Cape Town and all the information is supported by extensive research and documentary evidence.
