About Michael James Keleher

A farmer in the Victoria Hill district and one of the best known identities of Clifton and surrounding districts, Michael was the second son of the late Susan and John Keleher, early pioneers of the Warwick and Stanthorpe districts, and later at Pratten. Married to Miss Hannah Kileen, a member of a well known Deuchar family, he aquired a property at Victoria Hill, established a home, where he resided until his death. Hannah died in 1919. His obituary said “He associated himself prominently in all matters for the advance ment of Victoria Hill. Deceased was a member of the State school committee at that centre for some years, and was also one of the prime movers, and active workers in the establishment of the Victoria Hill hall. Outside his district he also took a keen interest in public matters, and was a member of the committee of the DDPA and I Association, and a keen supporter of the annual shows held under its auspices at Clifton. For a term of 3 years he served as a Councillor of No 2 division of the Clifton Shire. He was a popular and esteemed member of the community, and enjoyed the friendship of a host of friends. Survived by 2 sons, Kevin (Victoria Hill); and Timothy (serving with the RAAF), and 3 daughters, Mrs L. K. Meara (Millbrook), Mrs John Taylor (Dalby), and Mrs Mat O'Halloran, jun (Victoria Hill). Five brothers, and 5 sisters also survive him. They are: John J. (Taigai); James A. (Felton), Thomas P. (Felton South), Denis J. (Pratten), Timothy (Justice Department, North Queensland), Mesdames T. Baker (Warwick), F. Venaglia (Felton), Miss Susan Keleher (Pratten), Sister Catherine Keleher (nurse Brisbane), and Sister Mary Patrick Francis (Sisters of the Good Samaritan, Wollongong, NSW).
