Born in the Elizabeth Garret Anderson Hospital for Women in London (which is now a museum - part of the University of London). Grew up in the London suburb of Kingsbury. Was a choir-boy and bell-ringer at St. Andrew's for a while. Went to an all-boys grammar school in Harrow - the type of school with uniforms, including beanie caps. On finishing grammar school went to the University of Manchester, where I studied physics and maths. Became interested in solid state physics. First job with a sub-division of de Havilland aircraft in Stevenage, Hertfordshire working on a variety of missile systems (all cancelled). Got fed up with the restructuring of the aerospace industry in Britain and decided to do "something completely different". Joined Seismograph Service Ltd. and got a crash course in seismic geophysics from a grand old man who learnt from the guy who first mapped the Saudi-Arabian fields after WWI. Got sent to Burma where I met the young lady who is now my wife of 55 years and who has the rich Scandinavian ancestry I now spend a lot of time researching. Came to Canada in 1965, joined the R&D division of Northern Electric, where I spent the next 33 years mostly doing work on new semiconductor devices and manufacturing processes. Retired before the big tech slump. Three children, six grandchildren ranging from 28 years old to 12 years old. Lots of fun.
