Michael Larey

Michael Larey, a Frenchman, married Mary De Ramis, a lady of Switzerland.

Because of some legal or ecclesiastical or caste-prohibition, they agreed to leave their native country, took vessel bound for America, and when it passed out of jurisdiction of France and Switzerland, they consummated thier marriage, and a three months bridal tour was joyously spent on vessel as it traversed the ocean to Charelston Harbor, South Carolina.

The French province or Swiss Canton they are from is not known.

They settled in Orangeburg District (now county) many years before the Revolution.

He became a large landholder and owner of many slaves.

Became a soldier in the Revolutionary War, serving alternatly under different partisan officers, Marion, Pickens, Sumpter, Rumph, etc.

Served as line officer, often wounded, coming home safe and sound, bearing the many scars of war.

He was a blood relative of Baron De Larey 1st, Napolean’s great physician and inventor and introducer of the ambulance into Napolean’s and all subsequent armies.
