Biography

Michael Metcalf III was born in Dedham, (then) Suffolk, Massachusetts Bay Colony on 21 January and baptized on 26 January 1644/5, the eldest son of Michael Jr. and Mary (Fairbanks) Metcalf.[1][2]

He was only 9 when his father died. He and his siblings were raised in Dedham by their mother and step-father.Christopher Smith

He married in Dedham on 19 September 1672,Elizabeth (Fuller) Kingsbury widow of John Kingsbury, [3] with a young daughter Elizabeth Kingsbury, born 23 Nov 1668.

They may have settled first in the Metcalf home on East Street; however, from the tax lists it appears that they soon settled on Dedham Island, possibly in the Kingsbury home. In 1676 Michael requested from the town a small parcel of land near the clay pits by the "house sometimes John Kingsburys."[4]

He served various years as a fence viewer for the planting field and the School Ground,[5] but, like his father, was destined for a relatively short life.

Michael Metcalf died in Dedham on September 1, 1693,[6] [age 48]. He was buried 15 September 1693 in Suffolk County.[citation needed]

On 29 Mar 1694, Elizabeth, widow of Michael Metcalf, was assigned administration on her husband's estate, with Daniel Fisher yeoman, and Thomas Fuller weaver, as sureties. The same day an inventory of the estate was presented by his widow Elizabeth, dated 17 November 1693. Household goods totaled £63, land, buildings and stock totalled £185.[7]

Michael Metcalf, son of Michael and Elizabeth, in an administration bond for the division of his father's estate, dated 11 April 1701, named his siblings as Thomas Metcalf, Mary Woodcock, Sarah, Eleazer, Hannah and Daniel Metcalf.[7]

Elizabeth died on October 24, 1732,[8] almost forty years after Michael, at the advanced age of 84.

Bachelor son Michael Jr. died three years later, in 1736, at age 61. He left the remainder of the estate to his brother Thomas [age 57] of Needham, having already deeded numerous tracts to Thomas' son Michael, including the land on both sides of East Street. He left £60 to his sister Mary Woodcock [age 59] and her husband Jeremiah Woodcock, if they acquitted all claim to her father's estate; about 10 shillings each to [half] sister Elizabeth Daman [age 67] of Dorchester, brother Eleazar [age 51] of Wrentham, and sister Hannah Stedman [age 48] of Brookline; a small amount to his deceased sister Sarah Gay's children; and an impressive £100 to the North Precinct School.[9]

Michael and Elizabeth had, in Dedham: [10]

Michael, b. May 9, 1674
Mary, b, October 3, 1676, m. Jeremiah Woodcock.
Thomas, b. January 3, 1678-9
Sarah, b. April 26, 1682, m. John Gay.
Eleazer, b. 1684
Hannah, b. 17 April 1687, m.1 Thomas Stedman Jr., m.2 Dea. Timothy Kingsbury.
Daniel, b. 25 June 1690

Research Note

The Sarah Metcalf who married in Dedham 6 Apr 1709 Joseph Wight and died in Dedham 28 June 1748 was not Michael's daughter. Michael Jr. in 1736 left funds to his deceased sister Sarah Gay.

He was freem. 1674. Of the mo. of these ch. we kn. nothing; but she may have d. and one Thomas of Ipswich, a widower, m. 1685, wid. Lydia Davis. Still more uncertainty is felt unless we give him ano. w. for the wid. of Thomas M. nam. Abigail, d. at I. 5 May 1727, aged 88 yrs. An earlier Thomas of Ipswich is found by Mr. Felt to be inhab. there 1638. Two of this name had, in 1829, been gr. at Harv. and seven at the other N. E. coll. It is oft. in old rec writ as no doubt it was sound. Medcalf. ___________________
