About Michael Pieterse Parmentier

Michael Pietersen Palmentier (1653) married Neeltje Cornelia Damen about 1679 in Bushwick, Long Island. She was the daughter of Jan Corneliszen and Sophia (Martense) Damen. (Sophia’s uncle Jan Damen owned Wall Street). They had 9 children. Michael was magistrate in Brooklyn in 1679 and 1691. They sold their mill at Bushwick in 1695 and their home there in 1699, joining his father at Kingston and later settled in Poughkeepsie.

Michael Parmentier was also known as Michael Pieterse Parmentier. He was also known as Michael Pieterse Palmentier. Michael Parmentier was born circa 1654 at Courtrai, Belgium. He was the son of Pierre Palmatier Parmentier and Antoinette Terrin. Michael Parmentier was born in 1664 at Manheim, Germany. He married Neeltje Damen, daughter of Jan Cornellszen Damen and Sophia Martense, circa 1679 at Brooklyn, Kings County, New York. Michael Parmentier resided at at Bushwick, Kings County, New York, in 1694. Michael Parmentier appeared on the census of 1698 at Bushwick, Kings County, New York; had two slaves. Michael Parmentier appeared on the census of 1714 at Dutchess County, New York; listed as Maghell Pallmatir with his wife, 2 daughters under the age of 16 and 2 slaves. He died circa 1729 at Poughkeepsie, Dutchess County, New York. From Dan Stifflear, 914 Valley View Circle, Palm Harbor, FL 34684 Michael Palmatier, only known son of Pierre Palmatier and Antoinette Terrin, was born about 1654 in Belgium. His father was originally from the city of Courtrari, Belgium (Van Kleek-LeRoy Genealogy, Manuscript Department, #8179), NY Genealogical and Biographical Society, NY City). Michael, age 9, came to America with his father in April 1663 on the ship 'De Bonte Koe' (The Spotted Cow). Michael married Neeltje/Cornelia Damen about 1679. She was the daughter of Jan Corneliszen and Sophia (Martense) Damen. Her father's uncle, Jan Damen, owned the Wall Street section of lower Manhattan. Michael was a magistrate at Brooklyn in 1679 and again in 1691. He also served as a Lieutenant in the Foot Guard. He and his wife sold their mill at Bushwick in 1695 and their home there in 1699 (NYG&BR, Volume 54), joining his father at Kingston. Not long thereafter they settled at Poughkeepsie. The 1714 census showed their household in the latter place, as composed of one male over 60, two males 16 or over and one under 16; one female between 16 and 60, two under 16, and two slaves. Since son Peter then had his own domicile, the two males under 16 were presumably Jan and Michael Jr., with Damen, the youngest, under 16. When Michael bought a farm at Poughkeepsie in 1699, it covered the whole upper part of the present city of Poughkeepsie. He was one of the first 3 magistrates in Dutchess County, a prominent man, whose children married into many important families. After about 1760 branches of the family migrated to other parts of NY . Michael and Neeltje were alive as late as 1724. Their death dates do not appear in any known record, but Michael probably died about 1729 and Neeltje about 1738, both in the Poughkeepsie area. For the Damen connection, see VAN BLARCOM FAMILY, in NYG&BR, Vol. 97. Michael and Neeltje were the parents of 9 children: 1. Peter, baptised 13 June 1680 at New Utrecht, Long Island, NY. 2. Jan, baptised 19 March 1682 at New Utrecht; perhaps alive in 1714; no further record. 3. Antoinette, baptised 27 July 1684 at New Utrecht. Married Barent Van Kleeck, son on Hon. Baltus B. Van Kleeck and Tryntje Buys. They were the parents of 12 children. 4. Michael, baptised in 1687 at New Utrecht. 5. Neeltje/Cornelia, baptised 20 October 1689. Married Myndert Van de Bogart, Jr., son of Myndert H. Van de Bogart and Helena Schermerhorn. They were the parents of 9 children. 6. Sophia, born about 1691. Married Hendrick Pels. They were the parents of 6 known children. 7. Damen, baptised 21 January 1694 at New Utrecht. (Adriance works has his name as Damen Michael.) 8. Elizabeth, baptised 16 July 1699 at Brooklyn. Married Abraham De Graaf. They were the parents of 5 known children. 9. Johanna, baptised 5 July 1702 at Kingston. First wife of Frans Van de Bogart (brother of Myndert who married Neeltje above). She died 1725-28. They were the parents of 3 known children.
