About Micheal John Junior Timarearokaikah Albertkiu-Makoare
Father kills 6-month-old son, paralyses toddler by causing crash while high on P: A man who killed his 6-month-old child by driving when high on methamphetamine sobbed while hearing how his "abject stupidity" changed two families forever. Wade Makoare will have to live with the shame of his actions, the High Court at Whanganui heard on Thursday. Makoare, 25, was jailed for three years and six months for causing the manslaughter of his 6-month-old son Micheal and dangerous driving injuring five others. Micheal died in a head-on crash near Waiouru Military Camp on June 13, 2019. Makoare has never had a driver licence and stayed up the entire night beforehand smoking methamphetamine. He had more meth in the morning, thinking it would keep him awake for a drive from Palmerston North to Auckland. His car had five passengers, so Micheal sat on his mother's lap in the back. Makoare sped throughout the journey and only slowed for a moment when his partner asked him to. He got stuck behind a truck and trailer unit and looked to pass it on a section of road with a curve before a blind corner. The road was wet due to heavy rain. Despite his partner saying not to pass the truck, he pulled out, speeding along between 110kmh and 120kmh. He hit a vehicle driven by Daelyn Philps, in which Mohammed Najim and their two children were also travelling. Micheal died at the scene, Makoare's partner had a broken arm and an adult passenger broke an arm and her jaw. Philps suffered broken ribs and had internal bleeding, and Najim dislocated his hip and had a broken tibia. Their youngest daughter suffered the worst injuries, which left her paralysed from the neck down. Philps, reading a victim impact statement to the court while Najim eyeballed Makoare, said they had been on a two-week trip away from Wellington for their oldest daughter's birthday. She was driving carefully due to the weather and was shocked to see a car coming directly at them. "You just don't expect someone driving on the wrong side of the road. "We felt the rush of the two cars colliding head-on and then we blacked out." Their younger daughter spent four months in Starship children's hospital in Auckland on the verge of death, Philps said. Doctors and nurses kept saying they may need to move the child to palliative care. "We were told to, basically, start preparing for her funeral." They had to move out of their home, buy new equipment and change their lives to deal with their new existence, she said.
