About Michel Dragon

It's probable that the first Greek on the scene was named Dragonas (born 1734). Other immigrants to Louisiana called him Michel.
Dragonas arrived in New Orleans before 1764 and became an officer in the French militia when Louisiana was ceded to Spain. He participated in Governor Galvez's campaign against the British in Western Florida in the 1770s. His marriage to Francoise Chauvin de Monplaisir was noted in the local society pages and his grandson Alexandre is considered one of the great 'sons of Louisiana'. He served in the cabinet of the Confederate Government and became Louisiana's first state superintendent of public education. Like many prestigious New Orleans families, the Dragonas have their tomb in the oldest of New Orleans' mausoleums - Saint Louis No 1.
Dragonas was one of the first of many from the island of Chios to emigrate to North America. Fleeing increasing Ottoman pressure, then the violence surrounding Greek efforts towards autonomy and independence, Chiotes migrated in great numbers to the new continent. The first Chiot Society of Agia Markella was established in New Orleans.
