About Midshipman Henry Wilkes

Midshipman Wilkes Henry was on the sloop Vincennes during the United States Exploring Expedition (1838-42). The expedition was commanded by his uncle, Lt. Charles Wilkes.

Midshipman Henry was killed while bartering for food on Fiji's Malolo Island in July 1840. Charles Wilkes' retribution was swift and severe. Nearly 80 Fijians were killed in the incident.

The Antarctic Henry Islands were named in his honor.
