About Mildred Hirschi Smith
Mildred's mother, Mildred Thornock Hirschi, passed away 10 days after baby Mildred was born in November of 1918. According to Find A Grave.com, she was raised by her uncle and aunt, Otis and Maud Thornock Bateman. Maude was Mildred Thornock Hirschi's sister. Maude and Otis had only one daughter, Thelma. However, in the 1920 U.S. Federal Census for Bloomington, Bear Lake, Idaho, baby Mildred was listed in the home of her maternal grandparents, George T. and Mary E. Painter Thornock. In that census the family was listed as follows: George T., 51, Mary E., 47, George L., 23, Maud, 21, Lester P., 19, Milton T., 17, Clarence S., 11, Ellen, 9, William L., 7, Joseph G., 2 years, 7 months old, and granddaughter, Mildred Hirschi, one year, one month old. Mildred, age 11, was still living with George and Mary in the 1930 census. By 1940, Mildred, 21, was living in Moore, Butte, Idaho, and was working as a public school teacher. For the 22 weeks she worked as a teacher that year, she earned $352.00 income.
Mildred married Vernon Wallace Smith, the son of Clarence Smith and Eliza Roxy Mason. He was born April 5, 1919, in Cambridge, Bannock, Idaho, and died December 20, 1999, in Springfield, Lane County, Oregon. They had four children, and Mildred and Wallace died within one year of each other, and were both buried in the Bloomington Cemetery, Mildred in 1998 and Wallace in 1999.
