About Mildred Silverstein 1918-2009

Mildred Esther Silverstein (Esther Malkah bas Usher and Chanah)

2/25/18 - 10-28-2009 (age: 91) First generation American born and raised in Brooklyn, the youngest of five (Abrams) siblings, Mildred married her high school sweetheart, Louis, May 19, 1942 and their picture appeared in the October 12, 1942 issue of Life Magazine. Following high school, Mildred worked as a hat and hand model. She was devoted to her parents and siblings. Upon the return from WWII of her husband, they lived with her family on Ashford Street, Brooklyn where her first son, Alan, was born. The family then moved to Hollywood, CA where their second son, Barnett, was born. The family relocated back to Brooklyn, moving shortly thereafter to a garden apartment in Glen Oaks, Queens, where their third son, Jeffrey, was born. In 1955, her family of five moved to Bethpage where she raised her three sons with her husband, later moving her parents out of Brooklyn to a house several blocks away. She was a founding member of the Bethpage Jewish Community Center and was a Den Mother while her sons were Cub Scouts. As a devoted daughter and sister, she was constantly visiting her family and as a devoted Mother, always chauffeuring her children to their events. She became quite accomplished at executing home repairs, gardening, shopping, and Kashering meats at home. She was an avid contract bridge player, hand writing analyst, dancer, cruiser, golfer, and astrologist. She was the eternal optimist, finding beauty in everything and in everyone, always seeking and finding the silver lining and the good. When her children left for colleges, she worked as a bookkeeper for several local businesses. A devoted wife, sister, daughter, mother, and grandmother, she always put family first. Before permanently relocating to Florida, she was a snow-bird for several years spending Summer in Bethpage/Plainview, NY and Winter in Tamarac, FL, coming to rest in peace in New Montifore Cemetery, Pinelawn, NY, buried for eternity at the side of her devoted husband, Louis.
