About Miles M. Hart, Jr.

GEDCOM Note

1779 He served in the revolution with George Rogers Clark. In 1780 he went to Kentucky with Jacob Van Meter. In 1785, Miles Hart, Sr. and Miles Hart, Jr. were listed on the poll tax rolls of Nelson Co., KY. Miles Hart, Sr. was reportedly killed in 1785. In 1786, Miles Hart Jr. made a will dated September 6, 1786. According to Samuel Haycraft, Jr., Miles Hart was singled out by the Indians, who attacked his cabin in May of 1790 [obviously he was mistaken on the year, since Miles' well was admitted to probate in June of 1790]. Miles foungt valiantly, firing from an open door, jumping from side to side, but he eventually ran out of powder, and was killed. His wife Elizabeth, was known for being exceptionally delicate for the times was captured, along with his two sons. Elizabeth was pregnant at the time. The Indians took them to their camp near present-day Detroit. On the way, Elizabeth was about to give birth, she was made to make fires for the camp, and then she had to make a small fire for herself away from the camp. There she gave birth to a son, all alone. In the morning, the squaws took pity on her and gave her a board to carry the baby on, then they resumed their march to the camp. She was held captive for several years, but was eventually rescued by a French fur trader, and returned to Hardin Co., where she remarried and lived a long time. The baby she had in the snow died at about six months. There is no mention of what happened to the other boys, but it is believed that at least one of them survived.
