- John Macrae, born 13th March 1614, son of Farquhar M., min. of Kintail ;
educated at Grammar School, Fortrose, and Univ. of St Andrews, M.A. (where his rival for honours was the Earl, afterwards Duke of Lauderdale), and Aberdeen ; pres. by George, Earl of Seaforth, and adm. in 1640. He became a bitter opponent of Presbyterianism, and in 1658 was rebuked for his " litigiousness, needless contention and untractableness, his stubbornness, selfishness, his tediousness, misapplication of scripture, seeking passages savouring of much bitterness and disaffection, and his pertinacity and loquaciousness." After 1660 the minute of censure was deleted and characterised on the margin "as shameless lying and the spirit of lying and malice." He died Aug. 1673.
He marr. (1) Agnes, daugh. of Colin Mackenzie of Kincraig, and had issue —

Catherine (marr. Donald Ross of Knockcartie) ;
Isabel (marr. Lauchlan Mackinnon of Corry, Skye) :
(2) Florence Innes, heiress of Balmain in Urray, and had issue
— John ; James, who succeeded in right of his mother to Balmain."

- Rev. John Macrae of Dingwall, Episcopalian Minister. In 1638, when the Presbyterians gained the ascendancy in the Church of Scotland and deposed the clergy who would not subscribe the National Covenant, Mr. John wished to leave the country, but was prevented by his father, who kept him with himself in Kintail.
He married, first, Agnes, daughter of Colin Mackenzie, a younger son of Roderick Mackenzie, first of Redcastle, and
secondly, Florence Innes, heiress of Balnain. He died in 1673 and was buried in Dingwall.
John Breac Macrae, ws foster brother [of] Kenneth Mor, third Earl of Seaforth, both being brought up by John Breac’s father, the Rev. Farquhar Macrae, in Ellandonan Castle. He was Tacksman of Achyaragan and had a joint wadset [(Scots Law) A kind of pledge or mortgage.] of Camusluinie with his brothers Miles and Murdoch, for which his father paid ten thousand marks. John Breac was also Chamberlain of Kintail
