About Miriam Alice Wornum
A Failed Match.
Miriam Gerstle was a granddaughter of Lewis Gerstle and Hannah Greenebaum, and daughter of Lewis' son William and his wife Sara Hecht. Like Louise Sloss, her inclinations brought her far outside the normal social circles of her family. In 1922 she was briefly engaged to Godfrey Pope, an Englishman and owner of a tea growing enterprise in Sri Lanka. Unlike Louise, Miriam's parents were apparently nonplussed by her impending marriage to an "outsider", and in fact encouraged her. The engagement, however, did not last, and while visiting in England, Miriam broke off the engagment.

An Overseas Wedding While still in England after breaking her engagement with Godfrey Pope, Miriam Gerstle was reminded of an aquaintance she had made while travelling, an architect named George Wornum. Apparently their romance was quick, as within a year of the announcement of her previous engagement, they were married. Breaking from her California roots, Miriam was maried in London's St. James Church, was presented at the royal court, and lived for decades in England with her husband.
