MONROE SALISBURY DIES IN NEW YORK
Well Known Pioneer of California Succumbs to Cancer
Monroe Salisbury died of cancers in New York city on Thursday evening. He was attended by his daughter, Mrs. Danforth T. Boardman of this city. The west lost one of its pioneers and western history one of the men who helped make it. Salisbury came from New York in his early manhood and established the stage lines that did service between San Francisco and the Dakotas before the railroads came.
Always a follower of the new trail, Salisbury went to Nome in the first days of the Alaskan boom. His venture there was not a success and he returned to Pleasanton, Alameda county. For two seasons past he managed the racing enterprises of James Butler of New York.
Mrs. Boardman and Mrs. A. L. Keyes are the surviving daughters of the deceased. Sidney Salisbury, a son, committed suicide four weeks ago in the city. His act was attributed to worry over his father's condition. A few years ago Mrs. Salisbury, then the arbiter of San Francisco's society, died suddenly at the Palace hotel.
O. J. Salisbury, a brother of the deceased, is a banker and mining man of Salt Lake city. His only sister, Mrs. Ellen S. Cash, is temporarily at Berkeley.
Mrs. Boardman left New York yesterday for San Francisco, accompanying her father's remains."
