Mordechai Bentov

Mordechai Bentov (Hebrew: מרדכי בנטוב‎, born Mordechai Gutgeld on 28 March 1900, died 18 January 1985) was an Israeli journalist and politician, and was one of the signatories of the Israeli declaration of independence.

Biography

Born in Grodzisk Mazowiecki (then part of the Russian Empire, today Poland, Bentov studied law for two years at the University of Warsaw and was one of the founding members and leaders of Hashomer Hatzair in Poland. He immigrated to Mandate Palestine in 1920, and continued studying law in Jerusalem.

He was amongst the founders of Kibbutz Artzi, and was a member of Mishmar HaEmek kibbutz. By this time he had risen to the leadership of Hashomer Hatzair, and was one of its representatives in the Histadrut and the World Zionist Organization. He was also one of the Jewish Agency delegation to the United Nations in 1947. [edit] Political career

On 14 May 1948 Bentov was one of the 37 people to sign Israel's declaration of independence, and was appointed Minister of Labour and Construction in the provisional government. In 1949 he was elected to the first Knesset as a member of Mapam. He was re-elected in 1951 and 1955, after which he was appointed Minister of Development, a post he held until 1961.

Although he lost his seat in the 1965 elections, he was appointed Minister of Housing by Levi Eshkol, remaining in the position until 1969.

Education: Attended a Polish Gymnasium; and studied the Law for two years at the University of Warsaw. In pre-State Israel in the 1920’s he studied Law at the Mandatory (British) School of Law in Jerusalem. Certified as a Lawyerץ

מרדכי בנטוב - גוטגלד

מרדכי בנטוב (גוטגלד) נולד בגרודזיסק, ליד וארשה, כ"ז אדר ב' תר"ס (28.3.1900), לאביו יוסף גוטגלד (משכיל מתקופת ההשכלה, ציוני בעל השכלה עברית, בעל הוצאתספרים פולנית בוארשה, שביתו היה מקום פגישה לסופרים ואמנים יהודים), ולאמו הלנה בת מרדכי הינסדורף ממלבה. למד בבית-ספר עממי ובגימנסיה פולנית וחוץ מזה היה פעיל בין ראשוני הסתדרות הצופים העברים בפולין בעודו גימנזיסט בן 15 ולמד גם עברית. אח"כ למד בפוליטכניון ובאוניברסיטה בוארשה והיה ראש קן "השומר הצעיר" וחבר ההנהגה הראשית.

ב-1920 עלה ארצה בראש קבוצת חלוצים ראשונה של קן וארשה. עבד בכבישים, יבוש בצות, בנין וחקלאות - בעין גנים, בקבוצה הוארשאית בפתח תקוה, השתתף יחד עם קבוצתו ביסוד קיבוץ ב' של "השומר הצעיר" ע"י נוה שאנן שבחיפה, ואח"כ עבר עם הקבוץ לנהלל ולעפולה עד שהתישבו בקביעות במשמר העמק.

ב-1925 נשא לאשה את צפורה בת מרדכי רדליך מבוברקה ע"י לבוב שעלה ארצה ב-1920.

גמר את לימודיו בשיעורי המשפט של הממשלה בירושלים והוסמך למשפטים, היה פעיל בהנהגה המרכזית של "השומר הצעיר" וחבר ההנהגה העליונה, חבר הועד הפועל של הקיבוץ הארצי, חבר הועדה הפוליטית וכו'. השתתף כציר בקונגרסים הציונים ה-17, 18, 20, 21, ו-22.

נבחר ב-1934 לועד הפועל של הסתדרות העובדים העברית הכללית בא"י ולמרכז המפלגה. ב-1935 לועד הפועל הציוני, ב-1938 למרכז החקלאי. נסע פעמים רבות בשליחות התנועה לארצות אירופה ולאמריקה, ותוך מסעיו יסד ב-1927 בוארשה את הדו-שבועון הראשון העברי של התנועה "השומר הצעיר". היה חבר המשלחת הציונית בועידת "השלחן העגול" בלונדון ב-1939, חבר משלחת הועד הלאומי לקונגרס היהודי העולמי באטלנטיק-סיטי ב-1944 ביחד עם הד"ר ברנרד י'וסף, ד"ר מוזס וד"ר ישעיהו וולפברג וב-6194 שוב ביקר באמריקה, בשליחות המפלגה. ממיסדיו ועורכיו של העתון היומי "משמר בתל-אביב, חבר המשק של קיבוץ משמר העמק.

חיבר את הספר "הפתרון הדו-לאומי לארץישראל" באנגלית ובעברית, שהופיע כתזכיר מפלגת "השומר הצעיר" בשעת בקור ועדת-החקירה האנגלואמריקאית בא"י ב-1946, ושתשפיע במידה רבה על מסקנותיה.
