About Mordechai Mendel ben Daniel Kahana

From V. Kahn This branch of the tree is very confusing because the KAHAN family includes a series of men named Daniel and Mordechai, some who are fathers and others who are sons. I have records for a Daniel KAHAN who died in Sziget on 28 Mar 1887 (born about 1806). He had a son Mendel who was born in Sziget or Entredam (Jidovita) about 1827 and was a widower when he married Zlata PERL from Sziget on 7 Oct 1883. Mendel was a shochet in Sziget. Mendel may have been previously married to Sarah BROUN, mother of Regina Rifke KAHAN who died in NYC 17 Feb 1906. She was married to Solomon NAJOVITS b. in Avas Komarzon/Camarzana in 1843. He and Rifke had 11 children, the first of whom was probably Pepi Perel born in Sziget about 1865. No birth record has been located for Regina Rifke. It is unclear, therefore, whether her father was Mendel the shochet from Entredam son of Daniel, the leather merchant who died in Sziget in 1887 or a different Mendel whose father was Daniel, son of Rabbi Yosef HELLER Kahana of Kalusz who died in Huszt and was married to Malka.

From Lehel

The Book of Maramaros identifies father of Eszter wife of Rabbi Yehuda Grunfeld as Mordechai HaKohen, grandson of Mordechai HaKohen, brother of Aryeh Leib (author of Ketzot Hachoshen) and Yehuda (Kuntres Hasfeikot). Eszter’s surname is entered as KAHAN DANIEL on son Sloma’s marriage record, probably signifying that Daniel KAHAN was her grandfather. Died the day after Sukkot, 5645, 1884 See: http://www.jewishgen.org/yizkor/maramures/mar249.html and Maramaros Jewish Marriages, www.data.jewishgen.org
