Sports achievements
Joy Burgess was the Ladies' Open champion in 1958 and 1959 (she also placed in several other events during those two years), and in 1961 she came 2nd in the Ladies' Open, 2nd in Field, and 1st in the Silver Fern (a round which is shot at short range).

Joy's ashes were scattered on the Taruheru River, Gisborne, with flowers and floating candle lights, by family Robin Marlene Lane, Debbie Burgess, Dylan Kingi, Shadei Wainui, Courtney Wainui and Dylan's children Jordan and Aylah.
