About Morris Gilbert

Morris Gilbert was born Moshe Gelbardt in Poland around 1834. Not much is known about his early life and childhood. He worked as a Tailor. He married Annie at some point and they had a least one daughter together Rebecca born in 1857. Rebecca was likely the oldest of his children. In the late 1890s he immigrated to London, UK with his wife. His daughter was already in London 20 years prior. In 1901 he and his wife was lodging at 18 Hutchinson Avenue, London E1 with 2 other families. In 1904 he lived at 1 Duval Street, London E1. His wife was admitted to Tower Hamlets Infirmary a few times.

On 28th April 1905 he was admitted to Tower Hamlets Infirmary due to ‘Sores on Legs’. He was discharged on 8th May 1905. On the 31st October 1905 he was readmitted to the Infirmary due to ‘Epilepsy’, at the time he resided 20 Black Lion Yard/Montague Houses, London E1. He then was discharged on 8th December 1905 and was ordered to stay with his daughter Rebecca Harris at 13 Old Montague Street, London E1. On 6th January 1906 he was readmitted to the Infirmary as he was ‘Debilitate’ likely due to his seizures. His wife was unfortunately residing at the Tooting Bec Asylum at the time of his admission. He was discharged from the infirmary on 14th February 1906.
His wife Annie unfortunately died at Tooting Bec Asylum due to her becoming 'Senile' she likely developed Dementia. She died at the Asylum in April 1906.

On 21st May 1908 he was ordered by the courts to be removed from his address 'due to his deteriorating health', he was admitted indefinitely to the City of London Infirmary Workhouse, Bow. He also couldn't pay his rent due to his health issues, so he was likely sent to the Workhouse to repay his debts. Also he informed the courts that he had a sister called '.... Harris' but he may of got confused and called his daughter Rebecca Harris his sister due to his illness. He died a year later at the City of London Infirmary of Senile Decay which was highly likely Dementia.

2 of his great grandsons were named after him.
