Steve Maskell: "I guess you know the story about how Maurice Kelman left Russia: he was saved from a pogrom by a soldier that he had previously bought a drink for in a tavern in Odessa. There's another family lore about how Maurice's mother was struck by lightning in her house with her (I think) 11 children around her.
