About Morten Olufsen Kjærulf
Kristiansand was established by King Christern IV. in 1641, and Morten Olsen Kjærulf is thought to have come over from Denmark a short time later. Christern IV. died in 1648, and in printed sources there is disagreement as to whether Morten Kjærulf had any contact with him. In Captain Lengnick's memoirs we read that he "was said to have rendered great assistance in the development and fortification of the city and to have received from the king the pledge that he and his descendants would thenceforth occupy the city's most important civil servant positions."
Klitgaard believes that this is incorrect. He says that during the reign of Christern IV. Morten Kjærulf was not yet of age. This is probably correct. An inquiry was sent to the city of Kristiansand, but no information was obtained. It is possible that a history of the city has never been written. What we do know for sure is that Morten Kjærulf became a merchant, and that he was later "rådmann" (something close to deputy mayor) of the new town from 1687 until his death in 1696. The fact that each of his sons inherited 1391 "Rdl" (riksdaler, unit of currency used until 1875) indicates that he had become very prosperous. He had 9 sons. In those times the daughters did not inherit anything.
Morten Olsen Kjærulf was married twice. We do not know the name of his first wife. The second, Karen Andersdatter Dedekam, who was born in Kristiansand in 1659 and died in 1741, was the daughter of deputy mayor Anders Tønnesen and Karen Hansdatter Spinche. He had 14 children by these two wives. Most of them settled in Kristiansand and the surrounding area, and in this manner the Kjærulf family soon spread out across the country. (A family tree follows in the Norwegian text)
