About Moses Löw-Beer

According to a letter written in 1971 by Fritz Low-Beer, Moses left the ghetto in Boskovice around 1825 and started a wool washing business in Svitavka and then later began to manufacture cloth. Other sources set the date of his first business venture outside the ghetto to around 1838.

Built a scouring mill in Svitavka, north of Brno in 1839 which later became a textile/woolens factory run by his sons Max, Josef and Salamon. By 1848 he had expanded to a weaving mill. In 1850 he moved his whole family from Boskovice to Svitavka. Water rights on the river and perhaps also pollution by the dye works caused tension, perhaps motivating Moses's request to relocate part of his business to Brno.

The family home in the Jewish Quarter of Boskovice came with a lease hold of the distillery. He also began a business processing rags. He apparently toured Europe in the early 19th C and bought up old uniforms from Napoleon's soldiers and other armies and then processed them in his factory. From this business he accumulated the capital to establish first a wool washing factory and later wool spinning in Svitavka. In 1847 he was granted a provincial factory certification after which the Moses Low-Beer company was established.
