Author/Creator: Artist Unknown Date: 19th cent. c. 1835-1845 Physical Description: Painting, Oil on fabric attached to wood panel; 25.4 x 18.2cm Content and Scope: The figure dressed in black,with a white beard is shown frontally down to the waist, the right hand clutching a book; his eyes are large, dark and thoughtful. This is probably one of the earliest surviving portraits of a rabbi. The workmanship is provincial but executed with the care of a miniaturist.
