Biography

Born at Westborough, Worcester, MA to Moses Warren (1728-65) and Persis Rice (1728-1814) of Westborough. He and his son Daniel Warren (1786-1862) were the pioneers of Warrensville, arriving in 1808-10. MOSES WARREN, enlisted in the continental army 1776, remaining till near the close of the war, settled in Acworth, 1782 or 1783, removed to Warrensville, Cuyahoga County Ohio, of which his son Daniel was the first settler, having removed in 1808, following his brother-in-law Ebenezer Duty of Acworth, who subsequently settled in Ashtabula County. Mr. Warren accompanied his son to Ohio, was pleased with the country, returned for his family, walking the whole distance, 600 miles. Being hindered he did not emigrate till- 1815, when he and his family started for Ohio with a yoke of oxen, four horses and two wagons. They reached their destination after seven weeks' journeying. Here at the age of 55 he commenced pioneer life anew, building the first frame house in the township of his adoption. He, however, lived to see the comforts of civilization multiplied around him. Died at the age of 91. His wife Priscilla Nourse, sister of Daniel Nourse (see Nourse family), lived to the age 78. [1] ___________________________________________________

per Merrill, Rev. J. L., AcworthTown Historian, History of Acworth, with proceedings of the Centennial Anniversary, Genealogical Records, and Register of Farms, (published by the town of Acworth, 1869), 279.:

per Johnson, Crisfield, History of Cuyahoga County, Ohio, (D. W. Ensign & Co., 1879)
In 1815 Moses Warren, the father of Daniel, came to live in the township [of Warrensville], settling on lot fifty-four. His sons, besides Daniel, were William and Moses. The latter is yet a resident of East Cleveland.
per Secretary of The Commonwealth of Massachusetts, Massachusetts Soldiers and Sailors of the Revolutionary War, a compilation from the archives (1907): "[soldier,] Capt. Manasseh Sawyer's co., Col. Dike's regt.; pay abstract for mileage from home to Dorchester Heights; mileage for 38 Miles allowed said Warren; warrant allowed in Council Sept. 13, 1776."
per White, Virgil D., Genealogical Abstracts of Revolutionary War Pension Files, (The National Historical Publishing Company; Waynesboro, TN; 1990): "[soldier] was b 2 Aug 1760 at Westborough in Worcester Co MA & he lived there at [enlistment] & just prior to the end of the Rev he moved to Acworth NH & in 1815 he moved to Warrensville in Cuyahoga Co OH where he lived when he [applied for pension] 5 Nov 1832"
per ANNALS OF THE EARLY SETTLERS ASSOCIATION OF Cuyahoga County, NUMBER I,
A notable day in Warrensville was July 4, 1822. Nearly all the population--the Shakers excepted--turned out to celebrate the Nation's birthday. There were about fifty persons, young and old. Our band of instrumental music consisted entirely of a flute played on by William Dunshee. The marshal of the day was Moses Warren, who has now living in this city and vicinity one son, nine grandchildren, about twenty-five great-grandchildren, and--well, I will not figure on the later generation.
Western Reserve Historical Society publication, Volume 2, Issues 37-72; Western Reserve Historical Society, Cleveland
Published, 1888
An article about the first survey of Cleveland begins:
"The agents, surveyors, and employes of the Connecticut Land Company, celebrated the 4th of July 1796, at the mouth of Conneaut Creek; in all fifty-two (52)persons. Augustus Porter with Seth Pease, John Milton Holly, Amos Spafford, and Moses Warren..."
The article is by a Charles Whittlesey, in Western Reserve Historical Society publication, Volume 2, Issues 37-72; Western Reserve Historical Society, Cleveland, 1888. It locates the survey party at the northern edge of the Pennsylvania-Ohio border.
This demonstrates that a Moses Warren was in the region well before this Moses's 1815 immigration from New Hampshire. If this person is one of our Warrens, there are three possibilities:
This Moses, who would have been 36 years old.
A 2nd cousin once removed, 37 years old.
Another 2nd cousin once removed, 72 years old.
We have little information about any of these other than this 1760 Moses. Note that Seth Pease is on the survey team--probably head surveyor. He was descended from Robert Pease of Salem, MA. This Moses was 1st cousin 4x removed of Deborah Gardner, also descended from Nantucket and Salem ancestors, and married to Stephen Pease (about 1670). Also, Moses Warren's Great Grand Uncle, William Brown married Hannah Pease in Massachusets (1703).
