About Moultrie Rhame Godfrey

Moultrie Rhame Godfrey went to be with our Lord on August 14, 2006.

He was born in Charleston, SC, on December 20, 1916, the fourth of nine children of Thomas Benjamin Godfrey and Sarah Ellen Virginia Knox Godfrey.

He was pre-deceased by his first wife Lois Locklair Godfrey. Surviving are his wife, Elizabeth Bendt Bullock Godfrey; daughters, Faye (Dennis) Allison and Harriet G. Stephens both of Charleston, SC; a son, M.R. (Ted) Godfrey, Jr. (Marcia) of North Augusta, SC; a daughter, Gale J. Bullock of Charleston, SC; two sisters, Frances G. Knight (Robert) of Charleston, SC, and Letha Jane Godfrey of Houston, TX; ten grandchildren; ten great grandchildren.

He was a member of Ashley River Baptist Church and the Robert W. Major Fellowship Sunday School Class.

Moultrie graduated in 1933 from The High School of Charleston, where he was an active member of the football, basketball, and baseball teams, and later he was active in sports at The College of Charleston.

An excellent woodworker, he learned his skills from his father and assisted him in building mahogany boats while he was in high school and college. He expanded these skills to include building furniture, houses, and anything his family or friends needed. Later at the Naval Shipyard, he acquired mechanical skills which he also used to help anyone he knew. His many hobbies included fishing, hunting, and gardening, and he was an avid sports fan.

His greatest pleasures in life were his relationships with God, family, friends, and helping others.

At the age of 20, he became an apprentice at the Charleston Naval Shipyard. During WWII, as a machinist, he was one of the first workers to be trained to install and repair the MK 1A Fire Control Computer and other ordnance systems. This computer, an electo-mechanical system, was one of the earliest computers. It was instrumental in controlling shipboard guns, which contributed to the Navy's success in sea battles. When he was 23, he became a Leading Man, supervising numerous men whose work contributed to the war effort. During the remainder of his career, he served in many other supervisory positions and as a Production Controller in the Planning and Estimating Department before retiring in 1973.

Relatives and friends of Mr. and Mrs. Moultrie Godfrey are invited to attend the funeral services of the former in Ashley River Baptist Church, Thursday, August 17, 2006 at Eleven O'clock A.M. Entombment, Live Oak Memorial Gardens. Friends may call at J. HENRY STUHR, INC., WEST ASHLEY CHAPEL, Wednesday from Five until Seven O'clock.
