About Mount T. Peasley
Peasley Fought in Grant's Army
Mount Peasey, who will celebrate his 92nd birthday Thursday at his home in Greenacres, is believed to be the only surviving member of the Nathan B. Gregg post, Grand Army of the Republic, that once flourished in Hillyard.
He served nearly four years in the 30th Iowa infantry and clearly recalls his outstanding campaign. Yes, sir, I was with Genera U.S. Grant all through the siege of Vicksburg and was there when the Confederates surrendered and lifted the Mississippi river blockade,
"he said".
Then we were sent with General Sherman to clean up the Mississippi river county in that section. It has been said raising the river blockade and work work there broke the backbone of the Confederacy.
Mr. and Mrs Peasley, whom he married while homesteading in Nebraska in 1872 have lived in and near Spokane for 32 years, the last 14 years on a two acre valley tract. They were the parents of 11 children of who five two sons and three daughters, survive.
The Nathan B, Gregg post several years ago surrendered its charter when death reduced the ranks.
